How Should Jobseekers Be Approaching the Current Job Market?
Finding employment can be a big challenge, especially for those who have not had to deal with this task in a number of years. If you are currently in the market for employment, you have probably wondered what can be done to give yourself a better chance at getting the kind of job that you want. Fortunately, there are a few steps that you can take to help position yourself to secure gainful employment.
Determining Your Abilities
One of the most important elements of finding a new job is setting your focus. With so many different types of work available, it is important that you understand where your skills lie and how you can put them to good use. If you are not sure exactly what skills best represent you or you are having trouble getting started, an easy way to understand your abilities is to think about responsibilities that you have had at your previous jobs. What were you in charge of doing? What kind of tasks were you given? Instead of focusing on the tasks themselves, correlate these tasks and responsibilities to universal skills that can be applied in many different types of jobs. For example, if you were in charge of filing a report once a week, you could translate that task into an ability to meet deadlines and stay organised. Don’t forget to also think about the kind of work that you like to do. In an ideal situation, your passions will align with what you are good at. If this is not the case, try to find a job that allows you to do at least a bit of what you enjoy, so that you can improve your skills and work towards finding a job that is centered on your passion in the future.
Understanding the Current Job Market
Although Australia’s unemployment rate is currently above 6%, there are still some fields that are in dire need of new workers. According to Australia’s Department of Employment, employment in many fields will be on the rise between now and November 2018. The only fields that will face declining employment are manufacturing, mining and agriculture, and forestry and fishing. The fields that are set to see the largest employment growth are health care and social assistance, education and training, retail trade, professional, scientific, and technical services, and construction. The Australian government projects that these five fields combined will make up over 66% of Australian job growth between now and November 2018.
Aligning Your Abilities to the Market
If you already have training or a work history in any of these fields, you have a leg up on the competition and are in a good place to succeed with finding a job. If you don’t, there are plenty of places to go to learn about how to get qualified. For example, if you wanted to become a teacher in Victoria, you could check out resources on the Victoria Department of Education and Early Childhood Development website. For technical training, you could look into TAFEs and other education institutions that focus on the type of work that you want to do. Even if the field you want to work in does not have credential requirements, it is still a wise decision to seek as much education as you can about the jobs you want so that you can distinguish yourself from others applying for the same positions. You also have to be sure that your job search materials are in order. The key to having a strong resume is borrowing key words and traits from job descriptions in a particular field and then emphasising them when you describe your previous work. For example, if you are applying for a healthcare job that requires strong communication skills, you should emphasise the communication-related activities that you engaged in at your previous positions, or any type of education or formal training in communication that you have from the past. You should do the same with your cover letter; be personal and make it as specific as possible so that you can show prospective employers how much of a fit you are for the position that they are looking to fill. Above everything else, preparation is the key to a successful job search. If you spend enough time researching fields that you are interested in, learning about qualifications and certifications that you might need, and preparing your materials for an interview, there is a good chance that you can get the type of job that you have always wanted.
